The Tobacco Manufacturers’ Association (TMA) welcomes the latest Keep Britain Tidy initiative by ENCAMS which aims to encourage greater disposal of cigarette-related litter.

Chris Ogden, director of trade and industry affairs said: “Smokers, like all members of society, should be thoughtful and dispose of all litter, including cigarette butts and packaging, carefully and responsibly. The ‘tidy man’ symbol is printed on tobacco products packaging as a reminder of this.

“Targeting smokers in particular addresses one of the factors contributing to litter but we have been in discussion with ENCAMS with a view to encouraging a coalition of stakeholders to address the overall litter problem. We look forward to working with them more closely in the future to encourage the proper disposal of litter.

“Ultimately individuals are responsible for their own litter, and it is important to encourage consumers to dispose properly of cigarette packs and every cigarette, and to keep the “stub it and bin it” message in mind at all times.”

- ends –

Notes to Editors:

The press release is issued on behalf of the TMA’s principal member companies: Imperial Tobacco Ltd, Gallaher Ltd and British American Tobacco.
