Smoking in public places

Media Statement:

  • A ban on smoking in the workplace, in enclosed and “substantially” enclosed public places was introduced in England on 1 July 2007; Northern Ireland on 30 April 2007; Wales on 2 April 2007; and, Scotland on 26 March 2006.
  • 21% of the adult population chooses to smoke cigarettes or handrolling tobacco.
  • The TMA are not opposed to restrictions on smoking in public places. Smokers should have available to them places where they may smoke but without inconveniencing others and, conversely, non-smokers should have access to smoke-free areas. The TMA believes there is an economic case for potential exemptions in order to achieve a more equitable approach to public place smoking, as evidence shows in the majority of EU Member States who have achieved this. We hope that the UK Government will do the same when the Health Act is formally reviewed in Autumn 2010.
