The anniversary of England’s smoking ban and the Department of Health’s Future of Tobacco Control consultation are the main features of this issue of Briefing.

Last July saw the introduction of a ban on smoking in England’s pubs, clubs and bars. Since then pubs have been closing at a rate seven times great than the previous year and six out of ten pubs have been forced to shed staff.

The Department of Health’s consultation document seeks views on proposals to restrict tobacco product displays, ban vending machines and ban cigarette pack sizes of less than 20.
It warns against large tax increases which will only drive up the level of smuggling, crossborder shopping and bootlegging which, according to HM Revenue & Customs, has lost revenue of somewhere between £14 billion and £23.5 billion since 2000/1.

Also covered in this edition is the issue of Lower Ignition Propensity (LIP) cigarettes. We argue that it is only through work with UK and EU Governments that a solution, based on sound science, can be found.
